Family Dynamics

Family Dynamics are complicated. Family systems therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals resolve their problems in the context of their family units, where many issues are likely to begin. We help you to better understand the group dynamic and how actions of each individual affect each other and the family unit as a whole. One of the most important premises of family systems therapy is that what happens to one member of a family happens to everyone in the family.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders originate as a result of various psychosocial factors in an individual’s development. Eating Disorders are not primarily about food; rather, the relationship to food is a manifestation of underlying emotional distress. Eating disorders are put into place as a self-regulatory function, that a person utilizes to establish a sense of relief and control in the midst of internal turmoil. We will assist you in developing a healthier relationship with food and your body, and a more adaptive expression of feelings. We also emphasize the development of coping skills for the underlying emotional and psychological issues that create risk for relapse and barriers to recovery.

Trauma

Trauma is the experience of severe psychological distress following either “a ‘big T’ trauma” such as a terrible or life-threatening event, or “little ‘T’ traumas” which are more subtle events that harm or neglect one’s emotional needs consistently over time (mostly originating in childhood). Sufferers may develop emotional disturbances such as extreme anxiety, anger, sadness, survivor’s guilt, or PTSD. They may experience ongoing problems with sleep or physical pain, encounter turbulence in their personal and professional relationships, and feel a diminished sense of self-worth due to the overwhelming amount of stress.

Although the instigating event may overpower coping resources available at the time, it is nevertheless possible to develop healthy ways of coping with the experience and diminishing its effects.

Hilary has helped me through two difficult jobs, and her guidance has been crucial as I navigate my formidable 20's. As a former college athlete I've struggled with an eating disorder and body image issues and the stress that comes along with living amongst New Yorkers, many of whom wear a veil of confidence and ease, which tempt comparison, and can easily bring these issues back to the surface. Hilary is amazing at identifying where my triggers stem from and provides me with tools I need to help me manage them..”
